A Quick Bite is an engaging and delightful collection of short tales involving Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies. I rarely read tales involving mythical creatures but I decided to pick up this book because the author is a fabulous storyteller and I fell in love with her writing style the moment I read Abducted Life, a science fiction romance novel I reviewed some time ago. Although I had some doubts, I was pleasantly surprised how much a 200 words tale can hide.
The well-known mythical creature theme is blended with some elements of romance, humour and horror. The author combines these in such a manner that some tales cheer you up whilst others are rather frightening and have terrifying endings. Because of this, there is so much depth put in those 200 words that some stories might require a second and even a third reading.
One of the aspects of the book I found interesting was the multitude of points of view: there are numerous tales written from the human’s point of view whilst others are from the monster’s. This not only makes the book more enjoyable and engaging, but marks a similarity between humans and mythical creatures even though they essentially are different.
There are several great stories, if not all of them, but if I had to choose one it would be Worth it which is a sad reflection of many dysfunctional families and how much harm not being accepted and constantly being reminded of not being worthy and enough can cause. I especially loved this tale because it emphasizes the lack of empathy in humans and its presence in werewolves.
I highly recommend the book to fans of fantasy-themed books which are gloomy but not necessarily horror themed, and which also have a pinch of romance in them. Regardless of how you read it, one tale at a time or in one sitting, this is a book for anyone who is looking for engaging stories about zombies, werewolves or vampires. You can find A Quick Bite, as well as her other books, on Amazon.
