The Houseplant by Jeremy Ray | Book Review

The Houseplant was sent to me by the author, Jeremy Ray, in exchange for an honest review, for which I am beyond grateful. Told from the point of view of a plant, the touching short story revolves around a fern’s journey from the store to his beloved middle-aged human’s house. There is no secret I love my plants and, just as the protagonist did, I talk with them and try to offer them the best care possible, for which I am rewarded with the pretties leaves and little flowers. However, despite having a green thumb, I don’t think I have ever taken into consideration what my plants think or feel, which is very ignorant of me, let alone read anything written from the point of view of one.

Despite being a short story, The Houseplant is packed with emotions varying from fury to melancholy to joy, ultimately leaving the reader with all the fuzzy feelings and in a good mood. In very few pages Jeremy Ray manages to make one emotional through the drama George the fern goes through when he encounters the difficulties of mundane life and the very human emotions. What I strongly appreciated was how the author managed to balance the funny moments, starting from the hilarious language and George’s ability to physically react to whatever is going on around him, with the more profound themes such as love and “ownership” through his brilliant writing style and the literary devices he used.

I found The Houseplant to be a lovely story that brightened my day and left me wanting more. After reading this short story I will consider from now on whatever my plants think and I will try my best to appreciate their energy tentacles reassure them I have no bad intentions and I will not murder them. I recommend it to everyone, young and old, whether you like short stories or not, whether you prefer nonfiction or fiction, and I promise you you will not regret reading it. The Houseplant is now available on Amazon! You can find the link in @jeremyraystories bio.
