Patricia Josephine, an enormously underappreciated author who I’ve been friends with for more than five years, sent me her upcoming novel, The Cure, to review it, for which I am very grateful. If you have been reading my blog, you probably know that I’ve already reviewed quite a few of her literary works – and none of them disappointed! This novel is a rather different approach to the world of zombies, meaning that it depicts Erin, a bold and brave female character, on her journey to finding a cure that could turn zombies back into humans, their former selves. However, she cannot succeed on her own and tries training a zombie, Zee, but “can a zombie be trained”?
I have read a few zombie stories, some of them ending with them conquering the world and some of them revolving around a character fighting for their lives and looking for other human companions. I have seen a couple of seasons of The Walking Dead and the first few episodes of Fear the Walking Dead, but nothing compares to Patricia Josephine’s novel in terms of its uniqueness: a lionhearted woman trying to find a cure to save the world by risking her life and training a zombie for which she could easily become a fine meal. The Cure comprises supernatural elements built up in such a manner and with such writing techniques that the real world of the reader melts together with Erin and Zee’s world, which not only emphasizes Josephine’s flair, but turns the novel into a page-turner one could only devour in one sitting. Although I initially rated it with four stars, because I would’ve loved longer sentences with profound meaning, as I am writing this, I am realising why the author chose short sentences and I will give it five stars.
Unfortunately many authors remain unseen and unread (while others are tremendously overrated) and Patricia Josephine is probably the most underrated author I have ever read, which is quite frustrating as she always exceeds any expectations, with every book she publishes. The Cure is suitable for both younger readers looking for an introduction in the supernatural world of zombies and experienced readers who have already had their first contact with the dead but are looking for a different approach to the subject. You can pre order it in both formats, Kindle edition and paperback, and you can find all of Patricia Josephine’s works on her website and socials (Goodreads, Instagram and Twitter).
